QMEA PROJECTS
Toolkit for Girls
Toolkit for Girls, an event held in the Mackay region, attempts to address the issue of gendered occupational segregation. The coal mine industry and its subsidiary support industries are significant employers in the Mackay region. Many QMEA students look towards this industry for future employment. Unfortunately, women are significantly under-represented in this traditionally male dominated industry. This project with Pioneer SHS requires that teachers and students need to have an understanding of the barriers and issues that women who work in this industry face and how they can be addressed including at school level. This project would allow our female students in year 10 to 12 to speak, listen to, train and work with females working in the mining industry.
