Indigenous students shine

By   On February 13, 2012

Sixty-two indigenous students and eighteen staff from twelve of the thirty-four QMEA schools descended on Brisbane from Thursday 9 February to Sunday 12 February  to participate in a school-based traineeship recruitement event. Check facebook in the next couple of days to view the event photos. Look forward to your comments.

After the arrival lunch and welcome to county by Aunty Valda Coolwell, the students got to know each other through some team building activities in the Roma Street Parklands. After a quick refreshment students went off to GoMA to view an indigenous art display. At dinner that evening, Virgin HR specialist Cristilee Louitt spoke to the students about what she looks for when interviewing. The second day involved students spending time preparing their e-portfolios via the VUMI program then heading off to Skills Tech for Try a Trade activities. After another tasty dinner, students jumped on the bus to see Brisbane at night via the Mount Cootha lookout – a great experience especially for the large number of students who have never been to Brisbane.

The feature event was Saturday morning when our industry representatives listed below completed 20 interviews each. The set up for the morning was to allow each student to complete 2 x 5 minute interviews in Round One then reflect with their teachers on how to do better in Round Two where they completed another 2 x 5 minute interviews. The students grew in stature as they completed their interviews with worried frowns turning into great big smiles.

Well done to all involved. What students had to say about the event:

  • got along well with new people
  • it was great to have interviews with these big companies
  • the grouping was great
  • kids mingling with each other not just their own school
  • Skills Tech activity was really good experience and so were the interviews
  • the interviews helped you to better understand your career in the mineral and energy industry
  • goo accommodation, lots of good activities
  • excellent food and speakers
  • having everything fully planned was good
  • the interviews were good and really informative, lots of good answers
  • guest speakers who shared their stories with us
  • everyone enjoyed themselves
  • interview panel was great, food was great, venue was puuuuurfect
  • team activities were mad

A very big thank you to our industry representatives. This group of people gave up their Saturday to assist the students. QMEA looks forward to working further with this wonderful group.
