Xstrata Coal

Xstrata Coal is the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal and one of the largest producers of hard coking coal, producing both premium quality hard coking coal and semi-soft coal.

Headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Xstrata Coal has interests in over 30 operating coal mines throughout Australia, South Africa and Colombia. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Xstrata plc.

Xstrata Coal owns and manages several coal mining operations in Queensland, including mines at Collinsville, Oaky Creek, Newlands and Rolleston. 

In Queensland, Xstrata Coal produces 29.5 million tonnes of coal per annum for export and domestic use. They employ more than 3,100 people in Queensland, paying wages of over $199 million each year.

Since 2005, Xstrata Coal has invested $1 billion in Queensland in new mines and expansions. Xstrata Coal has a pipeline of major projects in Queensland including the Wandoan Coal Project, Sarum Coal Project, Rolleston Coal Expansion, Balaclava Island Coal Export Terminal and other mine expansions.

Xstrata Coal contributes to a broad range of education, health, arts, environmental and skills development initiatives within each of the countries in which it operates, to make a positive and significant difference to the communities that support its local and regional operations.
