Student Scholarships

QMEA Scholarships - APPLY NOW
Six QMEA student scholarships are awarded each year to Year 12 students wishing to pursue trade or professional employment in the minerals and energy sector. The scholarship awardees act as ‘ambassadors’ for 12 months, promoting QMEA and the benefits of working in the resources sector to industry, students and the community.
Each of the six scholarships consists of a certificate and a $2000 prize. Applicants must be a registered QMEA student, be enrolled full-time in a QMEA school and intend to complete Year 12. The six scholarships are announced and presented in March/April each year at the QMEA Awards Breakfast.
Current Year 11 students apply now for the 2012 scholarships. Closing date 25 November 2011.
Coal Seam Gas Scholarships (open to students from Surat region schools)

Origin, QGC and Santos are offering two $15,000 scholarships to high achieving students at Surat Basin schools. All you need to do is be registered as a QMEA student and submit a short application. QMEA Teacher Awards

Each year QMEA recognises the work of staff from QMEA schools with 2 types of awards. These awards are presented at the annual QMEA Award event held in March. Apply now. Applications close 25 November 2011.
QMEA Outstanding Teacher Award
A QMEA teacher (including teacher aides, lab technicians and other support staff) who demonstrates leadership and innovation in the teaching of minerals and energy in and across QMEA schools and the development of a strong industry network. The prize of $4000 is to be used towards a minerals and energy related event and/or professional development.
QMEA Teacher Recognition Awards
A QMEA teacher (including teacher aides, lab technicians and other support staff) who demonstrates leadership and innovation in the teaching and learning of minerals and energy in and across QMEA schools. Five prizes of $500 are available and are to be used towards a minerals and energy related event and/or professional development.



BRAKE – Young Drivers’ Program

BRAKE – Behaviour, Risk, Attitude, Knowledge, Education
A ‘Safety Awareness/Risk Assessment’ program supported by the Mining Industry Road Safety Alliance (MIRSA), based on teenage cognitive processes and focussed around driver awareness. This is a restricted program as per the BRAKE guidelines.
Environmental Projects

QGC_Dalby SHS Windibri Regeneration Project
QGC is currently undergoing rehabilitation of various sites located on and near its Chinchilla Coal Seam Gas sites to meet its environmental sustainability commitments in the region. This project will Involve both school and industry partners working closely together at an operational level, with coordination support from the QMEA at an administrative level. The project has commenced with Dalby SHS with the intention of adding further sites and schools.
Stanwell_Nanango SHS Environmental Project
The Stanwell and Nanango State High School Environmental Management Project was established for the purpose of:
- providing real world opportunities for students to gain the necessary skills and knowledge that could lead to an environmentally focussed career in the resources sector and
- providing industry with an opportunity to implement some of their existing environmental management strategies through a community engagement approach.
The project started in 2010 and will continue for two more years – 2011 and 2012. This project is based on a commercial arrangement between Stanwell and Nanango State High School. Under this arrangement, the school will expend funds to propagate seedlings and cultivate tingids to sell back to TE as a means of covering expenditure and developing income for project expansion.
Diploma of Engineering (CAD)

In response to the skills need for drafting across all industry sectors, the QMEA has been working with its counterparts in Manufacturing and Engineering and Building and Construction to develop a Diploma level traineeship in Computer Aided Drafting for students in Year 11. Students will undertake either 5 or 8 units of competency (depending on subject combinations) from the qualification during Year11-12. Ideally the student should commence the qualification under a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT) arrangement. The qualification should be completed as part of full time employment and /or training.

QSMART – QMEA Science Maths and Related Technologies Subject

What is QSMART?
QMEA Science Maths and Related Technologies
An innovative course in mathematics and science designed to offer equal opportunity for educational excellence for students enrolled in the senior phase of learning and contracted, or seeking to be contracted, to a SAT in Engineering and Electrical trades. This course is not exclusive to students in Engineering or Electrical SATs, but has primarily been designed with these students in mind.
QMEA, as owners of this course, will assess the suitability of a school to register and deliver QSMART. The assessment will be made on the basis of human and physical resources including access to industry, willingness to follow quality assurance processes and ability to meet stated timelines.

Interested?
Complete an Expression of Interest form to attend an information session about QSMART. The session will outline the registration requirements of the course. You will be advised re the scheduled date of the session.
How will QMEA support schools?
QMEA schools will:
- Receive complimentary registration provided audit and registration requirements are met
- bE assisted to develop teaching and assessment materials which will be shared online
- Send result data to QMEA for registered young people undertaking QSMART so that QMEA can provide data to QSA as per QSA guidelines
- Be assisted to access industry including site visits for teachers and students, work experience and other negotiated activity
- Not be covered for TRS
- Be covered for travel, accommodation, meals and catering to attend the following sessions as part of their QSMART registration:
– Information session (online technology will be used for non-metropolitan schools)
– Teacher induction and professional development (online and face to face)
– Validation sessions
Non-QMEA schools will:
- Pay registration cost of $500.00 per annum
- Be invited to attend all sessions organised for QMEA schools with a cost covering fee charged for catering, venue hire, photocopying i.e. $120 per session. Non-QMEA schools must organise own travel and accommodation.
- Send result data to QMEA for registered young people undertaking QSMART so that QMEA can provide data to QSA as per QSA guidelines.
What is the role of the QSA?
The Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) has recognised QSMART as contributing towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The QSA has no responsibility for implementation of this ‘recognised study’ course. QSMART provides per each course of QSMART:
- 2 credits for a C standard level of achievement at preparatory level and
- Meets the QCE numeracy requirements
What is required of schools?
A school registering to deliver QSMART must sign an agreement with QMEA which will list requirements such as teacher attendance at QMEA sessions, timelines for collection of result data and evidence of meeting both physical and human resource requirements for effective delivery of QSMART.

At the conclusion of the camp, the student teams present their findings / solutions to senior management staff for feedback / consideration.

First Trade Camp 2012 – Gladstone

This camp will be open to both students and teachers.
- Students – looking for an apprenticeship in a trade related field or other pathway entry points into the industry i.e. operator, technician
- Teachers – looking to upskill their VET qualifications i.e. Certificate I Engineering and industry currency to not only meet AQTF requirements but most importantly to improve teaching and assessment practices.
The camp will be open to all QMEA schools with a focus on providing opportunities for students attending schools from the Southern Region who do not have as much opportunity to access sponsors’ work sites as schools in other regions/
